Steps to take in the event of a water damage in your home

Having a water damage in your home can be a stressful time and can cause a lot of damage but here are some steps your can take to prevent more damage then needed. The following steps are general advice from 1st Choice Cleaning and Restoration, we have been providing carpet cleaning and water damage services in El Paso and Horizon City since 2008.

#1 Stop the source of the water
Once you know where the water is coming from you need to stop the water either by shutting off a supply valve or the main water supply to your house or business. If the water is still running the damage will spread and more damage will happen.

#2 Call a professional water damage company and your insurance company
After the damage stops your next step should be to contact a professional water damage company so they can quickly get to your house or business and begin the water extraction keeping the damage to a minimum. You also should call your insurance company to file a claim although if the damage is small you may not need to file a claim but your insurance company can help you determine if a claim is needed or not. It is important to consider that your insurance company may recommend a water damage company but that does not mean that you have to choose them and you may be better off contacting one on your own for quicker response.

#3 Remove and protect personal belongings
Any of your belongings such as furniture, clothes or electronics that are in the area that the water damage effected should be removed from the area to prevent further damage to them. In the case of large heavy furniture you may also put plastic under the legs to that the wood or metal is not on wet carpet or tile.

#4 Let the professionals do there job
Once the water damage company arrives they will inspect and explain the process of what they are doing, they will ask questions to insure that everything will be taken care of as well as answer any questions that you may have.
